Journey of a lifetime

Terry's take on exploring Greenland and the Canadian High Arctic - along the coasts of Baffin, Devon & Somerset Islands.

I recently had the rare opportunity to join a once-in-a-lifetime Arctic expedition with Quark Expeditions—and wow, what an EPIC adventure! For 20 nights, I sailed aboard Ultramarine, a purpose-built polar ship tracing the historic Northwest Passage.

We visited Inuit communities, where I was deeply moved by the warmth, strength, and rich cultural traditions of the people who have thrived in this harsh environment for generations. Hearing their stories firsthand was a profound and humbling experience.

There’s nowhere on Earth quite like the Canadian High Arctic—a vast, untamed wilderness where ice meets sky, and silence speaks louder than words. Towering glaciers, ancient fjords, and sculpted icebergs define the landscape.  Remote, raw, and breathtakingly beautiful, this is a place that stirs the soul and reminds you what true wilderness feels like.

The landscapes were beyond anything I imagined—however the wildlife completely stole the show. I experienced sightings of Musk Ox, Arctic Fox, Arctic Hares, Polar Bears, Bowhead Whales, Narwhals, Walrus, seals, thousands of seabirds and even a Gyrfalcon soaring overhead. Every day felt like a new documentary coming to life.

We spent our days on Zodiac excursions, took in jaw-dropping views by helicopter, and soaked up incredible insights from passionate guides, scientists, and historians.

And the ship itself? Super comfortable, with amazing food and a crew that made it feel like home.

I was thrilled with Quark’s commitment to sustainability and their Polar Promise—this adventure felt like meaningful travel.

This wasn’t just a trip—it was a real expedition. Wild, inspiring, and unforgettable.

If the Arctic is on your bucket list, this is the way to do it. I’d love to share more if you’re curious—just let me know!
